Call for submissions

The National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NDATT) is opening a call for submission of scripts to be workshopped in the Playwrights Workshop Trinbago’s (PWT) Annual New Play Festival 2020 (NPF). This year the NPF celebrates its fifth anniversary. The idea of a Trinidad and Tobago Annual New Play Festival was the brainchild of renowned playwright, actor, director, scholar, teacher Tony Hall, founder of the PWT. The first incarnation of the festival was called “A Triptych of Plays” (Studio Theatre Productions of 3 Short Plays) and was held in August 2010 at The Playwrights Theatre, Trinidad Theatre Workshop, Belmont. The following four festivals would also not have happened without his direction and support as Artistic Director and Dramaturge. NPF 2020 is dedicated to Tony Hall, without whom the festival and the various opportunities it presents to Trinbago theatre and theatre practitioners would not have existed.

In light of the COVID-19 situation and the limitations as regards to non-essential gatherings, the NDATT will be continuing the NPF in 2020 on virtual platforms. The audio recordings of the featured plays will be available on the NDATT and PWT’s online platforms.

Traditionally, three scripts were selected from the pool of scripts read at the PWT’s Monthly Readers Theatre Series (MRTS) to be featured in the festival. However, because the festival will be held on virtual platforms and playwrights are no longer restricted to being in Trinidad, the decision has been made to widen the pool to include Trinbagonians living abroad and allow them the opportunity to submit scripts for consideration in the NPF 2020. The NPF will continue to extend the opportunity to people living in Trinidad who may not be nationals or residents. NDATT sees the potential of the emerging global community relationship which has sprung up in the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The submissions will be reviewed by a committee and three scripts will be chosen for workshopping and presentation in the NPF 2020, which will be held later this year on dates to be announced.

The NPF features three phases: Script Development; Play Building; and Presentation. Playwrights will be paired with a dramaturge for the script development phase and must be prepared and willing to make any necessary rewrites.
